Best thing to happen in Houston in 2013, HOU-DFW high-speed rail, HISD A+, METRO HOV adjustments, and more
Some smaller misc items this week, but trying to put together something special for my 1,000 blog post next week...- Scroll down for my take in Atlantic Cities magazine on the best thing to happen in Houston in 2013.
- Reason magazine gives HISD an A+ grade in their education rankings.
- NYT interactive map of poverty across America, including a detail map for Houston.
- Texas is the #1 domestic migration state, again.
- Houston and Texas dominate the metro areas with the most economic momentum going into 2014.
- I applaud METRO for making adjustments to keep the HOV/HOT lanes flowing, but am still opposed to HOV-only hours. What that means is that in the span of one minute you can go from a ~$7 charge to a $150+ ticket. Instead, they should just have very high tolls during those hours. If they need to make the toll $20+ during the peak hour, so be it - so long as they at least still have the option to use it if they need it, or they won't get slammed if they miss the window by a couple of minutes.

Judge Eckels' legal practice is built on a decades-long career in public service and leadership of the nation's third largest county. He is recognized as a national leader in issues of transportation, public finance/public private partnerships, homeland security, the environment and health care.
Eckels is the founding chairman of the Texas High Speed Rail and Transportation Corporation, a coalition of local governments, educational institutions and the private sector working to bring high speed rail to Texas. Eckels left that organization in 2010 to join Lone Star High Speed Rail, LLC; a private enterprise seeking to build a high speed rail system linking the major metropolitan areas of Texas with true high speed rail service.

There's no way that 92,000 vehicles make the whole trip from Dallas to Houston or Houston to Dallas every day or even ANY day, as the video claims.
The vpd per day is 26,000 south of Fairfield, 30,000 south of Centerville, and 29,000 south of Madisonville. So the number of vehicles making this trip would have to be less than 26,000, as some of the traffic there is local traffic.
